A Little Piece of Orkney

Matthew Heddle, born in Hoy in 1828, was Professor of Biochemistry at St Andrews University 1862-1883 and wrote the Mineralogy of Scotland 1901. He was a founder member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and later its President. He amassed one of the finest collections of minerals, which he gifted to the nation, and the mineral mattheddleite, as you might guess, is named after him.
